Dr. Shajareh: Sheikh Zakzaky barely alive; needs to be immediately releasd
The Chairman of the Islamic Human Rights Commission in the United Kingdom, Dr. Massoud Shajareh noted the bad condition of Sheikh Zakzaky in Nigerian prison and demand his immediate release.
The Chairman of the Islamic Human Rights Commission in the United Kingdom, Dr. Massoud Shajareh noted the bad condition of Sheikh Zakzaky in Nigerian prison and demand his immediate release.
On the 5th anniversary of the capture of Sheikh Zakzaky and martyrdom of some of his followers and family by the Nigerian army, the Chairman of the Islamic Human Rights Commission in the United Kingdom, Dr. Massoud Shajareh noted the bad condition of Sheikh Zakzaky in Nigerian prison.
At the beginning he appreciated the organizers of the conference and said, “It is five years ago when this massacre took place against Sheikh Zakzaky and the Islamic movement of Nigeria. We know that during that period over 1000 people were massacred both in the Hosseinieh and also near the resident of Sheikh Zakzaky. That included his 3 remaining sons and his sister who was burned alive in that compound. Many children, a number of people who were pregnant women, men, elderly, young people (were killed) with no mercy.”
“Consequently, afterward when inquiry was set up by the governor, although there was no confident and that’s why Sheikh’s movement, Islamic Movement of Nigeria refused to take part, nevertheless, the findings were very alarming. The army admitted that they have at least killed 400 people and they have (also) admitted that they have buried them in mass graves without an information to their family or their loved ones, which resulted in now that we know that under 1000 people either confirmed killed or disappeared who are believed that to be killed on that day”, he added.
“The international court just started investigation when we reported the details of what has happened, the detailed names of those who have been killed in that massacre. Shortly after the investigation by highest court of Nigeria eventually said Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife arrest is unlawful, against the constitution, they should be released, compensation has to be paid, and safe accommodation should be given to them. Because the army had destroyed their house and every evidence. And the evidence is not usually destroyed by governments, they are usually destroyed by criminals, unless the government is also the criminal which here is the case”, Dr. Massoud Shajareh said.
“His abuse was as such at the time of arrest that the photographs show that he barely alive. After we took a team of doctors more than a year and half a go and for the first time, he had access to the independent doctors he’s got lid poisoning, heart condition, his wife has got many other conditions. They cannot be treated in the prison. That’s why the court ruled that he should be taken out”, Shajareh Added on the health condition of Sheikh Zakzaky.
“As the matter of the fact now we are still exactly where we were. Five years on he still hasn’t been properly charged. The courts are delaying and you know that although the highest ruled that he should be released, the government refuse to do it. The reality is that something needs to be done, this innocent man, and this man who is loved by so many needs to be released and in Nigeria his people are going out five days a week every working day, demonstrating for his released and as the consequent of that they have been shot at, tear gassed and died”, Shajareh added.
The Chairman of the Islamic Human Rights Commission in the United Kingdom, Dr. Massoud Shajareh said, “We internationally need to recognize the reality that this abuse in such a clear daylight in front of the whole world, cannot be allowed to continue. And there is no appeasing for people who killed and admit killing thousands of people and bury them in mass graves. We need to put pressure on international community and everyone and we need to wake up and we continue not putting pressure on Nigerian government, these 5 years will become ten years and these 10 years will become 15 years and then will become basis for injustice not just for Islamic movement of Nigeria but for everyone else.”
In the end, Dr, Shajareh concluded, “I prayed that Allah give us tawfiq to be part of the campaign and pressure that is needed to release him. Thank you.”
