The Seminar “Spiritual, moral and scientific life of the late Ayatollah Sayed Muhammad Mahdi Al-Khersan” was held in the conference hall of the AhlulBayt (a.s.) World Assembly in Qom.

ABWA Official Website – On the occasion of the 40^th day of the demise of the wise scholar Grand Ayatollah Sayed Muhammad Mahdi Musawi Al-Khersan (r.a.), a seminar on the spiritual, moral, and scientific life of that late scholar, was held in the conference hall of the AhlulBayt (a.s.) World Assembly in Qom.

The seminar was held with the participation of figures, including Hojat al-Islam Sayed Abdul Fattah Navvab, the representative of the Supreme Leader of the Revolution in Hajj and pilgrimage Affairs, Ayatollah Muhammad Hadi Yusofi Gharavi, Ayatollah Muhammad Javad Tabasi, of the professors of higher courses at Qom Seminary, Hojat Al- Salam Abdul Rahim Abazari, writer and researcher of Islamic sciences, Hojat al-Islam Sayed Munzer Hakim, head of Al-Zurriah Al-Nabawiyya Research Institute, Hojat al-Islam Reza Eskandari, secretary of Umana Al-Rosol scientific congress, and Hojat al-Islam Reza Mokhtari, director of the Shiite Bibliography Institute.

The late Ayatollah Al-Khersan spent his blessed life in research

In this seminar, referring to the family of the late Ayatollah Al-Khersan, Ayatollah Mohammad Hadi Yusofi Gharavi stated, “The late Ayatollah Sayed Hassan Al-Khersan was one of the students of Ayatollah Sayed Abdul Hadi Shirazi, and one of his actions was writing introductions to the works of Sheikh Tusi. His children also wrote scientific introductions to the works of Shiite scholars, which cannot be compared with the scientific introductions written by others.”

“The late Ayatollah Sayed Muhammad Mahdi Al-Khersan wrote a book in 25 volumes about Abdullah Ibn Abbas. In this book, he refuted the accusation of Abdullah Ibn Abbas’ capture of Bait al-Mal and severely criticized the people who made this accusation. In his book, the late Ayatollah Al-Khersan mentioned the sequence of those who mentioned this accusation and criticized the documents and sources of each of the books in this regard,” added the professor of advanced courses at Qom Seminary.

In the world of research, writing, and teaching, Ayatollah Al-Khersan had a long career

Further in the seminar, Ayatollah Muhammad Javad Tabasi, referring to the characteristics of the late Ayatollah Sayed Muhammad Mahdi Al-Khersan, stated, “This honorable figure was one of the students of Ayatollah Sayed Hassan Al-Khersan, the late Grand Ayatollah Khoei and the late Grand Ayatollah Al-Hakim. The late Ayatollah Sayed Muhammad Mahdi Al-Khersan has the permission to narrate hadith by many Shiite and Sunni ulama.”

“Despite his old age, the late Ayatollah Sayed Muhammad Mahdi Al-Khersan had a long career in the worlds of research, writing, and teaching. In the past, research in the Najaf seminary was not common, and figures such as the late Ayatollah Sayed Muhammad Mahdi Al-Khersan initiated research in this seminary,” added the prominent professor of Qom Seminary.

The late Ayatollah Al-Khersan did not join political factions

In another part of the seminar, Hojat al-Islam Reza Eskandari, secretary of Umana Al-Rosol Scientific Congress (Trustees of the Messengers), while referring to the scientific position of Ayatollah Al-Khersan, stated, “The late Ayatollah Al-Khersan had unique scientific scrutiny in his research, and we tried to explain these details in the commemoration conference of Ayatollah Al-Khersan so that it can be used by researchers.”

“The late Ayatollah Al-Khersan did not join political factions. Of course, his father, the late Ayatollah Seayed Hassan Al-Khersan, played a political role, and to strengthen the position of Imam Khomeini (r.a.) when he lived in Najaf, he gave him a congregational prayer in his mosque and arranged the preparations for holding the classes of the late Imam in this mosque. The late Ayatollah Sayed Mohammad Mahdi Al-Khersan was a neighbor of the late Ayatollah Sayed Mustafa Khomeini in Najaf, and there was a close relationship between the two,” added the secretary of Umana Al-Rosol Scientific Congress.

Ayatollah Al-Khersan’s works were in defense of Shiism

At the end of the seminar, Hojat al-Islam Reza Mokhtari, director of the Shiite Bibliography Institute, stated, “At the same time that the works of the late Ayatollah Al-Khersan were in defense of Shiism, did not contain any harsh words that prevented the publication of these books in other countries. At the request of Najaf publishers, he also wrote introductions to many works by Shiite ulama, which have been collected in a two-volume book.”

“There are works of the late Ayatollah Sayed Muhammad Mahdi Al-Khersan in manuscript form that have not been published so far and should be ready for printing as soon as possible. Also, Ayatollah Al-Khersan’s encyclopedia should be published,” noted the director of the Shiite Bibliography Institute.

Biography and scientific works of the late Ayatollah Al-Khersan

The late Ayatollah Sayed Muhammad Mahdi Al-Khersan (r.a.) was one of the prominent ulama of Najaf Seminary, who had a special focus and dedication to research and authoring. To answer historical, jurisprudential, and hadith doubts, he bequeathed beneficial and lasting research as his legacy. Proofreading and authoring important works on translation, genealogy, theology, hadith, and jurisprudence were only a part of the extensive services of this modest and humble seminarian professor to publish and promote the teachings of the AhlulBayt (a.s.) school.

Some of the works of Ayatollah Al-Khersan, all of which are in Arabic are: “موسوعة عبدالله ابن عباس”, “کشاف بلدان منتقلة الطالبیة”, “السجود علی التربة الحسینیة”, “علی إمام البررة”, “المحسن السبط مولود أم سقط”, “نهایة التحقیق فی ما جری فی أمر فدک للصدیقة و الصدّیق”, and “الظاهرة القرآنیة فی نهج‌البلاغة”. The book “موسوعةُ عبداللهِ بنِ عباس، حَبْرُ الاُمّة و تَرجُمانُ القرآن” (Encyclopedia of Abdullah ibn Abbas; the Great Scholar of Ummah and the Translation of the Quran) is an encyclopedia about Ibn Abbas, the paternal cousin and companion of the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h), is one of the important works of the deceased, which won the Book of the Year Award of the Islamic Republic of Iran In the Field of Religion in 2016.

To commemorate Ayatollah Al-Khersan, the offices of Imam Ali (a.s.) and Imam Hussain (a.s.) Shrines, along with about thirty other scientific and cultural institutions, including the AhlulBayt (a.s.) World Assembly, held an international congress. This congress was held on October 17 and 18, 2022, in Najaf, and on November 23 and 24, 2023, in Qom. This congress was the first congress of the series of commemorations under the title "Umana Al-Rosol" (The Trustees of the Messengers).

During his lifetime, Ayatollah Al-Khersan lived in Najaf and was the imam of the Sheikh Ansari Mosque in the city. On September 17, 2023, at the age of 97, he passed away in Najaf, and after the funeral procession, he was buried in the shrine of Imam Ali (a.s.).
